Chevrolet made a significant design change to their full-size Impala car line in 1961/62, marking the end of the extravagant fins era. The '62 Hardtop model introduced a new "convertible roof" design. Although racing near the factories was considered politically incorrect, the '62 Impala offered the formidable 409 cubic inch V-8 engine, favored by drag racers. Since 1958, the full-size Impala had consistently been one of Chevy's best-selling car lines. The '62 model belonged to the third generation of Impalas, featuring more restrained styling compared to its predecessors. Buyers had the option to choose from five different engines, ranging from the 230 cubic inch 6-cylinder to the powerful 409 cubic inch V-8.
